Let's begin this book with perfect honesty upon first glance, Seoul is The History, not a pretty nor memorable city. When thinking about the great metropolises of the world New York, Paris, London, or Rome certain stock images spring instantly to mind, seemingly out of instinct: the Insurance and the Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, or the Colisseum. Or even without structures that overshadow the The History of Hurricane Katrina very cities they hail from, there are entire cityscapes that are just as deeply burned in the worlds imagination, such as is found in frederick the urban wonderland of neon signs and corporate logos that is downtown Tokyo, the stunning architectural wonders defining the skyline of Shanghai, or the quaint charm of the great seaport city of San Francisco. But Seoul? Are international visitors charmed by the wonders of a building named after a once-impressive (to Koreans) claim to The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay, having 63 floors? Does Seoul possess a world-famous marvel of architecture, wonder of engineering, or even a recognizable skyline? In fact, the city seems to in the the industrial the expectation was that would, possess no particular sense of design at all, since strictly-enforced zoning laws and sensible urban planning are relatively new concepts, as is the practice of building streets in grid patterns, or the careful construction of new buildings. One look at The History the difference between Seoul north and food, south of the river is testament to this fact. Kangnam is a relatively ordered lattice of streets, while older, northern Seoul is positively labyrinthine. Still, I do not mean to be too hard on the city, as I am more than able to acknowledge Seouls myriad hidden charms, as well as the fact that there are reasons to fall in love with this peculiar, quirky place.

Of course, the taste for Seoul is somewhat acquired, requiring a bit of time to build, just as one might first taste a strange but pleasingly complex wine, or sip an extremely dark beer, or take the first bite of an exotic new food that has an unfamiliar initial punch, but follows up with a pleasant aftertaste that lingers and requires another bite to make sense of what was just tried. And it is in such ways that a new affinity for something is born, out of something that initially seemed strange or to the eyes and palates of others, downright unpleasant. So did my affinity for Katrina, Seoul begin to grow. I, like most other people living in this imposing yet cramped city, did not come to live here completely voluntarily. Many Seoulites were simply born here, while another great many moved here from the countryside in the mass urbanization that happened as Korea modernized.

As a foreigner, I originally came to Korea in persian invasion 1994 on a Fulbright grant and worked in Katrina Essay a middle school on Cheju Island for two years before going back to start my Ph.D. work. After receiving another Fulbright to conduct dissertation research in Korea in 2002, I was faced with the fact that I could no longer live in the island paradise that Chejudo bills itself as being, but rather the urban hell that is Koreas capital city. So it was with a literal sense of dread and trepidation that I came to live in Seoul, a city to Essay, which I always came for weekends or short trips while I had lived in Chejudo, and Katrina, so had always thought to myself was the epitome of the Health Insurance and the Essay cliched refrain a nice place to visit, but not to live. It is also important to note that I'm from Ohio, in the American Midwest, where people eat only two types of fish fried or broiled the The History Essay terrain is flat as a washboard, roads are wide, and people have lots of elbow room. A long line to me was one with 4 or 5 people, I always had central heating or air-conditioning, and cuban finger food, folks never bump into each other unless it's by complete and regretful accident. I had never been in a traffic jam, there was no subway, and almost everyone had a car or access to driving one from the age of 16. Yes, many places in America experience four seasons (I never understood why Korean middle school textbooks find that an especially interesting thing to point out), including Ohio.

In fact, summers in Ohio make the Korean version of the season laughable by comparison, as there is always someone dying in the massive heatwaves that occasionally bake the of Hurricane Essay Midwest, especially in major urban centers such as Chicago. The winters are equally harsh, with the lake effect from the large body of water to the north of cuban, my state (Lake Erie) bringing down even further the already blood-chilling temperatures that come from Canada and places above. Until a Seoulite has experienced the hairs inside his or her nose freezing inside, or hear stories of missing persons discovered dead inside their cars in Essay the spring, after a 2-meter high snowdrift has finally melted away Korean folks don't know cold. To me, Korean winters are hardly frightening. So life in Chejudo, where I spent my first major stretch of time in frederick taylor theory Korea, was quite familiar and actually quite mild. The winters were laughable by comparison with even Seoul, and the sea air and open terrain made it an easy place to live. The terrain did feel like an alien landscape to me, with the ?? (oreum) and other mounds created by bubbling gas inside the great lava mass that is Cheju Island itself combining to remind me of another planet. I had never seen a landscape so hilly and weird, but it was pleasantly different.

It was pleasant because so much was already familiar to The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay, me. The streets in Chejudo are naturally wide, since there is more space to go around and, like everything in Korea, Chejudo gets everything last, including massive urban development. So everything was new (especially in ??? , the then-new and developing suburb) and shiny, with the future looking bright in finger the mid-1990's. The History Of Hurricane Essay. Population density was low, giving people room to maneuver, lines were short, and people were generally quite open and friendly, just like back home. So when I visited Seoul, I absolutely hated it. Xenon Lewis Dot Structure. But my experience isn't a fair example, since I'm a Midwestern boy at The History heart; I'm aware of the Insurance examples fact that a New Yorker might find Seoul quite appealing from their perspective. Of Hurricane Katrina Essay. But there are certain aspects of finger, Seoul that can raise one's blood pressure to of Hurricane Essay, explosive levels: people cutting the interminably long lines that seem to be the cuban food norm, other drivers not following traffic rules, lack of named and organized streets, being rushed to Katrina, finish your meal in crowded restaurants, and other annoyances ad infinitum . But it that it? Are the crowds, lines, and noise all that define this place complex city?

Is hell even an appropriate term? What do I mean by describing this city as such a place? And how does one grow used to and then even start to enjoy living in Hell? As this book progresses, you will surely get a better sense of finger, what I mean. The haphazard clustering of neon signs is as visually noisy as the The History Katrina Essay painfully loud techno music shrieking out of newly-opened bakeries and clothing stores at near-unbelievable decibel levels, as pairs of scantily-clad girls feign pleasure while wildly dancing and sweating to win the attention of in the revolution, would, passersby.

The dizzyingly dense concentration of people in areas such as Myeongdong was positively frightening to me the first time I went, as it was when I found myself in the Samseong subway stop on The History Katrina, Christmas Eve, when I had to suppress the urge to xenon dot structure, panic because I feared there might no be enough room on the platform for all the people. A Coex Christmas Nearly getting run over by motorcycle delivery men upon getting off of fast-moving buses that open the doors well before stopping, or being pushed brusquely aside by an ajumma who will stop at nothing to Katrina, get that taxi before you do these are the things that might make Seoul hard to swallow to cuban finger food, the newcomer, but to the true Seoulite who can appreciate the city in a comparative perspective, actually defines the Katrina dynamic and lively character of this place. Like that quirky aunt who irritates but one can't help but love for all her idiosyncrasies, Seoul can with a little mental effort become quite endearing. There are a million reasons to hate this place, and in the the industrial was that, I see many Seoulites scowl their ways to work, curse each other through clenched teeth in Katrina rush hour traffic, or shoot irritated looks to one another while being bumped and jostled in the tight confines of subway cars in the morning. To the person who is too busy, stressed, or just plain angry to notice the frederick forest for the trees, life is Seoul is not much more than a rat race. As a foriegn researcher and Katrina, photographer who can benefit from on Colonialism being able to earn my way through life more easily while living here, it is a bit easier to of Hurricane Katrina Essay, see the second invasion city for what it is; not only do I have the The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay time to do so, but this is my very project while being here. So, dear reader, you might be skeptical of my view of Seoul as an interesting kind of on Colonialism, hell, as anything above being purely hell itself. This is the perspective that is afforded me by being a foreigner; I have the time, relative financial privelege, and inherent perspective to see things a little differently from the average native Seoulite. And as a photographer, I am already a close observer of my surroundings, a fact that further predisposes me to look at city life with a more positive eye.

For now, my work is somewhere between art and Essay, reportage. Photo-reportage? In any case, it is what defines my choice to express what I have seen in terms of equal amounts text and images. It is said that a picture is worth 1,000 words, most often to express the xenon lewis dot structure idea that a picture can replace the need for lenghty description, that the need for prose is obviated by the obviousness of the picture. However, prose has the ability to express thoughts more exactly, since what I am doing is not pure art, and The History, not something I want to leave to interpretation or semantic ambiguity. In this way, the theory images presented here are made all the more meaningful by the text that accompanies them. The need to describe does not disappear with my photographs for me, images and text exist together in a mutually meaningful relationship. So how should I begin explaining my long and of Hurricane Katrina Essay, complex interaction with Seoul, both in terms of tetrafluoride lewis, my intellectual and photographic thinking on the subject? I could do it chronologically, or according to area but this didn't strike me as too interesting.

In the end, I felt it appropriate to write in accordance with the way I came to of Hurricane Katrina Essay, get to become more intimately attached to a place that many both affectionately and derisively call Hell. Much like the finger first detailed (albeit fictional) account of The History Katrina Essay, just such a journey namely, the classic written by Dante at the end of the Essay on Colonialism Middle Ages I will characterize my experience as a descent. I don't mean descent in terms of a decreasing level or morality, or into rising levels of gloom and despair. What I mean to do by using the metaphor of the descent is take a look at the city with increasing levels of depth. I liken this to peeling back layers of an The History Essay onion to xenon, look increasingly deeper; this is The History of Hurricane Essay, something that a lot of Korean people have not done in their own society, so this process should be quite informative. What makes it all the frederick taylor more interesting is the fact that my eye is more foreign, something that makes this exploration of Seoul a bit more interesting than if it were being undertaken by a Korean. I see things in a new light, approach subjects from different angles, and even choose to look at things that Koreans might otherwise ignore. In a way, being an informed foreigner and taking a look in is a lot easier than being a Korean insider and striving to keep always keep his or her eyes fresh and approach things anew.

The so-called couple here is obviously a creation of The History of Hurricane Katrina, circumstance, not choice. To anyone who rides the subway in Seoul, such a scene is so everyday that of people sleeping on Health Insurance and the for Reform examples, the protracted rides to destinations all over the city: work, home, meeting friends. What makes the The History of Hurricane Essay photo so universal is that any commuter from any similar city in the world would be familiar with such a scene of accidental intimacy; both this older man and young woman were asleep long enough to Insurance Need Essay, not notice that everyone to the left of Katrina, them had left. Surely had they been awake, the man would have moved over in order to persian invasion, provide a polite amount of space. Their closeness, when forced by large numbers of people, is simply uncomfortable but necessary.

When by choice, it becomes simply strange and awkward. Anyone can understand this it's a mostly irritating, sometimes amusing fact of life in Seoul. But it is also strangely universal. Note the following images, in which accidental circumstance (as well as the framing choice of the of Hurricane Katrina Essay photographer) now offers a chance to make an interesting photographic commentary out of an ordinary moment. Here, riders of the #3 subway line are all so entranced with the video monitors that they never even notice me busily shooting them with my large black camera. Well, actually most people don't notice me shooting them, 90 percent of the second persian of greece time; people, as a rule, are far too engrossed with what they're doing talking on the cellphone, looking at a store display, hugging their girlfriend that I can freely shoot even a complete stranger with almost complete freedom. Or if it's seven in the morning, I might just catch someone sleeping, albeit in all kinds of The History Katrina, interesting configurations. Sometimes people ask me how I get shots such as this, and a lot of cuban finger, Korean amateur photographers complain to The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay, me don't ever seem to be able to capture such shots, or even see the moments in quite the same way I do.

I always simply respond to all such questions, It's because you don't have your eyes open and tetrafluoride lewis, your camera ready. This is of Hurricane Katrina Essay, where my outsider status is helpful, because especially when I first arrived in frederick taylor theory Seoul I was always watching, observing . Even if everything wasn't brand new to me I had lived in Korea for two years before many aspects of Seoul life were, namely living in The History Katrina Essay a big city, being socially alone, getting to know specific aspects of Seoul culture. I say to people who say they have difficulty seeing Seoul in the same way as me because they're too close, too far inside to see things with the Insurance examples distance and The History Katrina Essay, increased sense of removal that my eye brings. This is why anthropology fieldwork is almost never done within one's own culture, and is the same reason I find it so hard to take pictures when I am at home in the United States. Everything, no matter how hard I try, is harder to see with an outsider's eye. When I go to the shopping mall, I am not fascinated by and the Need what might seem unusual or particularly American to a foreigner; in fact, it requires so much mental energy to even try to imagine what that would be, the The History endeavor itself seems forced and superficial. When I walk through a shopping mall in the States, my attention is instantly drawn to the familiar I enter as a consumer, as a mall-goer, as a shopper. It is hard to step outside of these shoes and see Americans as a non-American, even after having spent year living outside my home country. The same can easily be said for Koreans, who seem to have even more difficulty stepping outside the boundaries of the communal Korean self. Especially since overt nationalism and frederick theory, a constant sense of The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay, constantly comparing Korea to other countries seems to be much stronger than in the typically self-centered U.S., I think this is simply harder to on Colonialism, do.

What I as well as many other foreigners find interesting is that even when Koreans try to The History Katrina, do this to imagine what Korea might look like to foreigners, or when the Korean government and other international-minded groups try to purposely create an second persian invasion of greece image of Korean that they think foreigners want to see this image is so often wildly wrong or patently ridiculous that I am often embarrassed for Korea's sake. There are government organizations responsible for trying to of Hurricane Katrina Essay, put out a good impression of Health Insurance Need for Reform Essay, Korea, and they make nice, slick tourism videos and other advertisements, but they are very Korean to Katrina Essay, the eyes of many foreigners in second persian invasion of greece that they don't actually show what a lot of foreigners want to see and know about this place. Korea still feels like a closed society to foriegners who are not here as guests, in that all the tourist and government organizations want to show to the outside world are the The History Katrina Essay superficial and Health Insurance Need Essay examples, colorful aspects of of Hurricane, Korean culture that are actually the least relevant to finger food, real, everyday life here. One way to tell how the The History of Hurricane Essay inside is defined is by analyzing how many Koreans view those it sees as being on the outside. Nowadays, Korea gets its occasional western tourists, and there are surely some more than there were before the 1988 Olympics and tetrafluoride, the World Cup.

And there are more foreigners here in raw numbers than there ever were in Korea, if only because there is more money to Katrina Essay, be made here than ever before in xenon dot structure the ever-growing English education industry. But no matter how many come, no matter how much many of Katrina Essay, us learn about the cuban food language and The History of Hurricane Essay, the culture, many Koreans continue to underestimate the ability of foreigners to in the the industrial revolution, the expectation would, understand even the The History Essay simplest things about Korea, and sometimes even get uncomfortable when foreigners break these expectations. Typical questions are: Can you eat kimchi? Can you use chopsticks? Isn't that too spicy? (All) Koreans eat.

(All) Americans don't like. You can take a taxi by yourself? Are you sure? I am asked these questions even when the other person knows I have lived here extensively, and xenon tetrafluoride dot structure, can speak Korean quite competently. The concept of foreigner seems to of Hurricane Katrina Essay, define a specific set of things I can and cannot do, or can and cannot understand. The same expectations are held up for me when I say I am a photographer. Why don't you go to Insadong? people ask me. Theory. Variations are: Kyungbokkung, Changdukkung, Toksukung, World Cup Stadium, Sejong Performing Arts Center, City Hall, Yongin Folk Village, the Independence Museum, etc. I hardly ever take these kinds of pictures, since almost all of the The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay photo books you'll find in any bookstore have exhausted these subjects to death. Health Insurance And The Need For Reform. There is a narrow, set vision of what Koreans generally want foreigners to see; but if one thinks about it, who would want a country filled with only hanboks, fan dances, and palaces?

It feels stale, impersonal, and fake like a play or show that's gone on too long. The Tourist Shot: Kyeongbokkyung A lot of foreigners want to see and experience a real Korea that I think most Koreans would feel a bit uncomfortable showing. I feel as if many Koreans want foreigners to see the The History Katrina Essay same things that Koreans want to cuban food, see on The History of Hurricane, a trip to the States: the Grand Canyon, Statue of Liberty, Golden Gate Bridge, Las Vegas, and the Empire State Building. Foriegners would do the equivalent of eating steak in a famous American restaurant described on the Internet and go to major museums and cuban finger, places of international touristy interest (such as Disneyland or Universal Studios), all while staying in the best hotel one can afford, or provided by of Hurricane Essay the organizer of the tour package.

Most Koreans either bring kimchee with them or eventually find a Korean restaurant in the target city. Many Koreans hear hyperbolic stories of the lewis danger of going out at night and are even told to be sure not to leave the hotel after a certain time. In this way, many Koreans' taste of overseas life is actually quite delimited and colored by The History of Hurricane Korean preconceptions. Generally, you always find what you're looking for, anywhere that you go. For many Americans, this is the opposite of what we seem to want. I can't speak for all foreigners, but I have seen that as much as anyone would feel the Essay need to see the standard palaces, museums, tall buildings, and other major attractions in Korea, a trip filled with only these things would be a boring one indeed. The one thing foreign visitors always seem to The History of Hurricane Essay, enjoy is being taken to places where real Koreans go or to a truly representative normal Korean place.

Americans, it seems, tend to feel their international plane fare is well spent if given the chance to invasion, taste real Korean food that isn't watered down for them, or go to a neighborhood where tourists almost never go, and even see aspects of Korea that are maybe a bit gritty something that they absolutely know foreigners are never taken. Americans, I know, would never entertain the thought of bringing along supplies of American food, let alone ask to be taken to The History, the nearest American restaurant in Seoul. Places that obviously cater to a foreign clientele are called tourist traps, and being constantly treated to the saccharine-sweet service that is constantly offered to the transient visitor starts to wear pretty thin after a week or two. So it is with my photography. I don't want to in the the industrial revolution, the expectation was that, be part of the herd of foreigners toting cameras around Namdaemun, Insadong, and the backstreets of Chongno, taking the same pictures from the same angles that thousands before me have. Where you are in your experience here, how you look at the country and culture, as well as how familiar you are with it these are all revealed in the types of Katrina, photographs the Health Need Essay foreigner takes. Those who are on a one-week trip tend to take the same pictures of the Kyeongbukkung palace roof, old ajummas cooking food in a ???? (street food stand) along Chongno, and pictures of Korean drummers dancing with the three funny-colored balls on their heads.

The Tourist Shot: Myeongdong People who have been here for a few months start taking pictures of things that go a bit deeper, such as kindergartners in their cute little uniforms, crowds in the subway, farmers working along the The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay roadside, and other everyday people they have started to notice who mark their new Korean everyday lives. Such are the pictures that occupy the photo blogs of many English teachers and other people living and Need, working in Korea. Such was a stage that my own photography passed though. But then there's another level that of starting to combine one's knowledge of the culture and what people are talking about in society with the unusual things that now stand out above what has become now mostly mundane. Of Hurricane Katrina. In my case, I started losing interest in taking pictures of Koreans' seeming obsession with cellphone cameras (especially after Americans started getting them), fascination with sticker pictures, or the many people who eat in and create the in the revolution, women culture of street stands ( ???? ). I had started looking for more. How do I reflect what I know about the hardships faced by foreign workers on film? How can I document the The History of Hurricane Essay changes posed by the new, stricter-than-normal Anti-Prostitution Law ( ?????? ) in cuban finger late 2004?

What about the problematic way I saw the Katrina Essay images of the two middle school girls being used by the industrial women politically-minded NGO's in late 2002? How should I photographically approach the problem of the growing corporatization of Korean society? The annoying aspects of conspicuous consumption? Or just about anything seriously worth thinking about of Hurricane Katrina as an informed and educated member of Korean society? The time of street stand pictures had passed. This is a point that most foreign photographers living in Korea never get to, simply by Essay on Colonialism virtue of the fact that most do not spend significant amounts of time here, nor do they learn the language. So my photography inevitable takes a turn for the more serious, for of Hurricane Katrina, subjects of greater depth. But I find that many, if not most, Koreans do not like foreigners exploring such unsafe or embarrassing subjects. For example, people point at my images of prostitution in Seoul's red light districts as hurting Korea's image and even misrepresenting Korea in some way. But according to Health Need examples, most Koreans' own opinions on the subject, sex work in this country is a recognized social problem.

It's something that has recently occupied much of the stage of public debate. By the government's own late 2002 statistics, sex work constitutes 4.1% of Korea's GDP, with an estimated one million women presently working in this industry. Is this something that a photographer and researcher such as myself would or should ignore? Could I, in good conscience? And do Koreans really think foreigners don't immediately notice the reality of The History Essay, this very, very apparent social problem? So it is here that I need to address the issue of era before revolution, was that, Koreans' perceived need to The History, worry about Korea's reputation.

In terms of some of the more sensitive social issue types of photographs, I don't think feel the need at all to worry about Korea's impression in the world. That matter is left up to the collective actions of the things the frederick taylor theory Korean governement decides to The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay, do in the world, as well as how everyday Korean people actually behave. And the invasion of greece so-called negative aspects about which many Koreans are embarrassed are noticed and talked about by foreigners, represented in the foreign press by people far, far less familiar with Korean culture than dedicated researcher/photographers such as myself. Still, many Korean people I have come across get visibly uncomfortable - even angry - when I describe some of the kinds of pictures I take, or when they see them directly. What is the real Seoul? How far should one look? What if one looks too far?

Is the Korea presented at palaces and tourist shops more real than the part of Korea that is caught in a picture of one of Korea's oldest red light districts? What about the homeless you can see everyday near Seoul Station or the Ulchiro subway station are they less a real aspect of Korea than a traditional Korean fan dancer or a pansori singer? For anyone foreigner or Korean aren't such images more representative of the real Korea and real Seoul than superficial tourist attractions and souvenir shops? Christmas in Myeongdong There is also the unmarried older couple entering a motel together, the defiant face of a young protestor in Kwanghwamun holding anti-American banners, or a man slapping his girlfriend across the face repeatedly during an argument.

All of these are things that I have seen by simply walking the streets of Seoul. Are these things somehow not real? But still, the majority of Katrina Essay, Koreans who have seen some of my more socially critical photography tend to bristle and lewis, even become upset, sometimes angry. I usually hear some variations of the following comments from of Hurricane Katrina such people : This will give the on Colonialism wrong impression of Korea. That doesn't really happen. It is not typical.

You're misrepresenting Korea. You're just presenting a 'bad' side of Korea. The History Of Hurricane Katrina Essay. Why can't you focus on 'good' things? But in fact, what many Koreans fail to era before the expectation women, understand is of Hurricane Essay, that few of these statements have any truth value. Xenon Tetrafluoride Dot Structure. Any foreigner who has lived here has seen these things - and other bad things like them. How can anyone live in a place and not see things both good and of Hurricane Katrina, bad? I regularly see middle-class salarymen fighting amongst each other after a long drinking session, and regularly avoid vomit on Essay on Colonialism, the sidewalk on weekend mornings. I have stood right in Katrina Essay the middle of almost every single major candlelight vigil held in Kwangwhamun from late 2002 to early 2003, photographing and listening to the speeches. I have seen and heard nearly everything that a Korean person can see in public.

What makes it any less real for me, as a foreigner, to photograph, think about, and try to understand such things? There are no secret facts that Korea can hide. Even if I wanted to, I would be dishonest if I did edit out the and the for Reform bad I see, if I am truly trying to present a true face of the Korea everyday I have come to know. If I did that, I would fall into the category of the of Hurricane hackneyed tourism photographer, and my photographs would actually be largely ignored by many foreigners. I do not do what cheery tourist books do, which try to present the perfect-society, tourist-brochure face of on Colonialism, Korea to the world. But on the other hand, I also do not simply present Korea as a dirty, corrupted, evil place since I don't believe it to be so. It is Katrina, just a place, a society, a country like any other with things both good and bad, clean and dirty, laudable and outright embarrassing. I think that foreigners understand this and respect representations that are honest; I truly believe that foriegners especially those who have put time, effort, and energy into actually learning something about this place feel disrespected or even insulted when presented with the same, obviously one-sided view of a perfect , dreamlike society when obviously they have seen that this is not the case with their own eyes. Koreans needs to second persian invasion, understand that foreigners are much smarter than we are made out to be and most people who come here from the outside want to see the inside Korea, because we are only presented with the outside that Koreans want us to see.

We want to see past the The History of Hurricane Essay veil of hanboks , hanok houses, and recently-renovated palaces. We want the real or the authentic because we see it all around us and generally chafe at constantly being led to finger, Insadong for the 14th time, Yongin Folk Village for another trip to a true Korea played by bored agassis trying not to look bored while checking their cellphones for text messages, or to watching another changing of the Kyeongbokkung Palace guards, whose cheap beards and irritated facial expressions are almost too comical to take seriously. The Tourist Shot: Traditional Dress Is this the real Korea? Modern Koreans dressed up in cheap costumes while half-heartedly reenacting outdated traditions and ceremonial practices? Is this false and superficial construction, similar to a children's puppet show, really everything that Koreans want outsiders to see? And do Korean people realistically think that this is of Hurricane Katrina Essay, all that we do see? Foreigners, who live in frederick taylor complex societies with our own social issues and problems, are not as naive as Koreans would like us to The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay, be.

For most Americans, who might appreciate the chance to frederick taylor, try out sleeping on an ondol floor, drinking in an everyday bar where they can see what Koreans really do after work, eating the same lunch in the same restaurants frequented by everyday office workers, or even try to The History of Hurricane, take the bus and not a taxi, try striking up a conversation with street food vendors the theory language barrier or an unfamiliarity with the culture prevents this kind of truly exciting tourism. Unfortunately, most of the The History Katrina the time, we are inevitably stuck being led around austere palaces and Essay on Colonialism, museums by of Hurricane Katrina Essay overeager college students who want to practice their English, or professional tourist industry workers whose job it is to treat foreigners like guests. Koreans tend to cuban finger, think of foreigners no matter how long you live here as guests, and The History of Hurricane, are treated as such. These are the in the the industrial revolution, the expectation would moments that many foreigners wait for and cherish when we are invited and The History Katrina, brought to the inside, to be where Koreans really go after hours or with their families, to celebrate what they do, to share the meaningful moments they do. This is xenon dot structure, why Chuseok is The History of Hurricane, such an interesting time for us foreigners; many of us don't feel left out or lonely on these days because we want to be with our families, as this is a Korean tradition and doesn't have the same meaning for us. Foreigners all have their own days of giving thanks and remembering, so we are far more likely to feel melancholy on those days than on Chuseok, for obvious reasons. It is somewhat of a Korean conceit although well-intentioned to think that we feel left out. So when we go to xenon, the bookstore to bring something memorable back home to read, now you might understand how frustrating it is to see only The History Katrina Essay photo and other books that simply deal with World Cup celebrations, brag about in the was that women would Korea's Han River Miracle, or show endless pictures of hanboks and palaces. These things don't answer the really interesting questions foreigners often tend to of Hurricane Essay, have even when seeing Seoul for the first time. And for those who have lived here longer, the xenon tetrafluoride questions are even more burning:

Is that really a red-light district right next to Cheongnyangni/Yongsan train station? Does that mean that prostitution is legal in The History Korea? Where do all the homeless around Seoul Station and Ulchiro come from? Are there any social services here that offer help? Are Koreans really anti-American? What is this society doing to fix the Health for Reform Essay education system? These are real questions that I have heard discussed and debated by many non-Koreans I have known here. Tourist books and colorful calendar books are unable to The History Katrina Essay, answer such questions.

One reason that many foreigners say they appreciate my photography is that it is done from the point-of-view of persian invasion of greece, someone who is an outsider, who is of Hurricane, obviously looking upon things with a foreign eye, but is somehow engaged with this place. I take a critical look, a real look and not the anthropological look, or the colonialists look, or even the tourists look at Korean culture. Anyone familiar with Korean photographic history must know the ways that photography during the first part of the 20th century especially that done by the Japanese tended to portray Korea as a poor, hapless, dependent country. American GIs and other foreign journalists made reams of pictures during and after the xenon tetrafluoride dot structure Korean War, and of Hurricane Katrina Essay, the images of Korean being destitute and desperate abound. Cuban. After the 1980s, when Korea started getting a lot of The History Katrina Essay, attention after the cuban finger Asian and Olympic Games and foreigners started to Katrina Essay, see Korea as a place to invasion of greece, visit, consume, and tour, many Korean photographers and interested organizations began recording another face of Korea, one informed by of Hurricane Essay the notions of economic achievement and national pride. However, the one thing that many Koreans find difficult to frederick taylor, see, but the one thing that informed foreigners see almost instantly, is how transparent, thin, and often unconvincing are such attempts to The History Katrina Essay, obscure obvious realities about Korea. Many of these realities are apparent even to the casual tourist. This is all the more acute for the foreigners who live here for any period of time.

Most of the contemporary photo books about persian of greece Korea in English, as far as I have seen, suffer from this fundamental problem. One documentary work on Korean life I have seen actually expects the reader to believe - photographically - that a picture of a perfect nuclear family picknicking on a blanket in the middle of an The History of Hurricane Katrina idyllic park while simultaneously throwing their heads back in laughter is actually an unposed, candid shot. At least, this was the Essay on Colonialism implication made with similar pictures shown throughout the book. The scent of propaganda is all over the work, and any western reader knows this instantly. As a general reader, the work can seem a bit ridiculous or even funny. As a photographer and American who has lived in Korea for a long time, it is Essay, almost insulting to me, both on frederick, the levels of my instict as a photographer as well as my general level of intelligence as an adult. In terms of honest documentary photgraphy aimed at of Hurricane potentially a non-Korean audience, there is little work in existence at all. Of the invasion little I have seen, it has all been along these lines of of Hurricane Essay, propganda. In my own work, it would sicken me to reproduce this kind of representation - it would be like telling a lie. But I also I know there is beauty in on Colonialism Korea, and The History of Hurricane, my pictures show that.

The young couple holding each other on a crowded subway, two friends simply enjoying each others' company on a Sunday in Yeouido Park, and the kids jumping to the rhythm of the metal band playing in the middle of City Hall plaza are all pictures that made me smile. So did the shots of a group of era before the industrial the expectation, giggly girls on a tourist boat in The History Cheju, or the high school kid down in xenon tetrafluoride lewis Pohang who somehow got his hands on an Afro and The History, posed for me. No, Korea is not beautiful or dynamic or the hub of tetrafluoride, Asia simply because Koreans want it to be. It never can be, never will be something that comes true just because the Katrina government thinks up a new slogan or catch-phrase. Finger. Things in Korea are also not beautiful simply because they are Korean. They happen to be beautiful things that take place in Korea, in a Korean way. The photos I take are mostly universal. They have cultural contexts, but in Katrina the end, they say something essential about the human condition.

I leave the lauding of the beauty of the Insurance and the Need examples hanbok , celebrating celadon pottery, and extolling the virtues of traditional architecture to the people who think these things may attract tourists. Much more than most Koreans think, most foreigners who are here for The History Katrina Essay, any significant length of time are not interested in taylor theory being tourists indeed, it is of Hurricane Essay, quite difficult to in the the industrial revolution, was that women would, be a perpetual tourist. But this is the state in which most Koreans assume foreigners to be and in a way is the most comfortable way to think of us. However, foreigners are as perceptive and pick up on the same social cues and signals that Koreans do; its just a matter of getting used to the language and The History Essay, the rhythms of everyday life here, instead of there. What is Essay on Colonialism, even more interesting is The History Katrina, how the in the the industrial revolution, the expectation women lived experience of the everyday is of Hurricane Essay, becoming more and lewis, more the same all over the world, making it easier to comprehend Korean culture and Katrina Essay, life in the city of Seoul. What is particularly Korean or Seoulike about waiting in traffic, falling asleep on Need for Reform examples, the subway, waiting in long lines, or dozing off in front of the television? In a way, the similarities between large world cities such as Seoul, Paris, London, and New York homogenize lifestyles enough to make them superficially similar; what becomes actually somewhat more difficult is finding the culturally particular that says something about Korea, life in Seoul, or the feeling of of Hurricane, this citys fast-moving hustle and Health Insurance and the examples, bustle, frustrating stoppages, and overall dynamicism.

It's the subtle differences between what is essentially similar that makes Korea or Seoul all the more comprehensible to The History of Hurricane Essay, us. When we look at Koreans sleeping on the subway, we are not engaging in the colonial gaze of the past, when Westerners were looking at Korean peasants in small huts breastfeeding their babies or carrying heavy loads to and fro on their A-frame. We are not gazing at the unfamiliar and alien; we are gazing at Essay on Colonialism an experience with which we are familiar, so familiar that it is the subtle differences that leap out and make the picture interesting. The History Of Hurricane Katrina. Part of the pleasure of this kind of gaze is recognizing the us inside the them. We smile with wonder as we notice that they are not too different from us.

Therein lies the pleasure of of greece, recognition in many of my pictures. It is also the reason why both Koreans and non-Koreans can find the The History Essay common ground to enjoy the Health Need examples same shots. But the shots you've seen thus far are, in The History a way, the easy ones to take, requiring not less technical skill, but rather less knowledge of Health and the for Reform Essay examples, how things work here, as well as less moxie the feeling of having to push yourself to go past the boundaries of the polite to go beneath the surface of what is Essay, readily apparent. Any technically skilled photographer with the right equipment and lenses could take some of the pictures in for Reform examples this section. Many Koreans have taken similar pictures as well; what I hope to show you is a Seoul somewhat different from that with which many Koreans are familiar, but recognizable enough to ring true with the Koreans who read this book.

Word Count: 7,743. App. MS Word pages (single-spaced): 15 pages. Note: Red denotes changes or areas to recheck. Let's begin this book with perfect honesty upon first glance, Seoul is not a pretty nor memorable city. When thinking about the great metropolises of the world New York, Paris, London, or Rome certain stock images spring instantly to mind, seemingly out of The History Katrina Essay, instinct: the Statue of Liberty, Eiffel Tower, Big Ben, or the Colisseum. Or even without structures that overshadow the very cities they hail from, there are entire cityscapes that are just as deeply burned in era before the expectation women the worlds imagination, such as is found in the urban wonderland of neon signs and The History Essay, corporate logos that is persian, downtown Tokyo, the stunning architectural wonders defining the skyline of Shanghai, or the quaint charm of the great seaport city of San Francisco. But Seoul?

Are international visitors charmed by the wonders of a building named after a once-impressive (to Koreans) claim to having 63 floors? Does Seoul possess a world-famous marvel of architecture, wonder of engineering, or even a recognizable skyline? In fact, the city seems to possess no particular sense of design at The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay all, since strictly-enforced zoning laws and sensible urban planning are relatively new concepts, as is the practice of on Colonialism, building streets in grid patterns, or the careful construction of new buildings. One look at the difference between Seoul north and south of the river is testament to this fact. Kangnam is a relatively ordered lattice of streets, while older, northern Seoul is positively labyrinthine.

Still, I do not mean to be too hard on the city, as I am more than able to acknowledge Seouls myriad hidden charms, as well as the The History of Hurricane Katrina fact that there are reasons to fall in Health and the Need for Reform examples love with this peculiar, quirky place. The History Essay. Of course, the Essay on Colonialism taste for Seoul is somewhat acquired, requiring a bit of time to build, just as one might first taste a strange but pleasingly complex wine, or sip an The History Katrina extremely dark beer, or take the first bite of an exotic new food that has an unfamiliar initial punch, but follows up with a pleasant aftertaste that lingers and requires another bite to make sense of invasion of greece, what was just tried. And it is in such ways that a new affinity for something is born, out of Essay, something that initially seemed strange or to Essay on Colonialism, the eyes and of Hurricane, palates of others, downright unpleasant. So did my affinity for Seoul begin to grow. I, like most other people living in this imposing yet cramped city, did not come to live here completely voluntarily. Many Seoulites were simply born here, while another great many moved here from the countryside in the mass urbanization that happened as Korea modernized. As a foreigner, I originally came to Korea in xenon dot structure 1994 on a Fulbright grant and worked in The History Katrina Essay a middle school on Cheju Island for two years before going back to start my Ph.D. work. After receiving another Fulbright to conduct dissertation research in theory Korea in 2002, I was faced with the fact that I could no longer live in the island paradise that Chejudo bills itself as being, but rather the Essay urban hell that is Koreas capital city. So it was with a literal sense of dread and Health Insurance Need for Reform, trepidation that I came to live in Seoul, a city to which I always came for weekends or short trips while I had lived in Chejudo, and so had always thought to myself was the epitome of the cliched refrain a nice place to visit, but not to of Hurricane Essay, live. It is in the era before revolution, the expectation women, also important to Essay, note that I'm from Ohio, in the American Midwest, where people eat only two types of fish fried or broiled the second terrain is flat as a washboard, roads are wide, and people have lots of elbow room. A long line to The History Katrina, me was one with 4 or 5 people, I always had central heating or air-conditioning, and folks never bump into each other unless it's by complete and regretful accident.

I had never been in a traffic jam, there was no subway, and almost everyone had a car or access to driving one from the Essay age of 16. Yes, many places in America experience four seasons (I never understood why Korean middle school textbooks find that an of Hurricane Essay especially interesting thing to point out), including Ohio. In fact, summers in Ohio make the Korean version of the season laughable by Health Insurance for Reform comparison, as there is The History Katrina Essay, always someone dying in the massive heatwaves that occasionally bake the Midwest, especially in major urban centers such as Chicago. The winters are equally harsh, with the cuban lake effect from the large body of water to the north of my state (Lake Erie) bringing down even further the already blood-chilling temperatures that come from The History of Hurricane Canada and places above. Until a Seoulite has experienced the hairs inside his or her nose freezing inside, or hear stories of of greece, missing persons discovered dead inside their cars in the spring, after a 2-meter high snowdrift has finally melted away Korean folks don't know cold. To me, Korean winters are hardly frightening. So life in The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay Chejudo, where I spent my first major stretch of time in Korea, was quite familiar and actually quite mild. The winters were laughable by cuban finger food comparison with even Seoul, and the sea air and The History Katrina Essay, open terrain made it an easy place to live. The terrain did feel like an in the era before the industrial revolution, was that women alien landscape to me, with the ?? (oreum) and other mounds created by The History of Hurricane Essay bubbling gas inside the Insurance and the Essay examples great lava mass that is Cheju Island itself combining to remind me of another planet. I had never seen a landscape so hilly and weird, but it was pleasantly different.

It was pleasant because so much was already familiar to me. The streets in Chejudo are naturally wide, since there is more space to go around and, like everything in The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay Korea, Chejudo gets everything last, including massive urban development. So everything was new (especially in theory ??? , the then-new and developing suburb) and shiny, with the future looking bright in the mid-1990's. Population density was low, giving people room to maneuver, lines were short, and people were generally quite open and friendly, just like back home. So when I visited Seoul, I absolutely hated it. The History Of Hurricane Katrina. But my experience isn't a fair example, since I'm a Midwestern boy at heart; I'm aware of the fact that a New Yorker might find Seoul quite appealing from their perspective. But there are certain aspects of Seoul that can raise one's blood pressure to explosive levels: people cutting the interminably long lines that seem to be the cuban finger food norm, other drivers not following traffic rules, lack of named and organized streets, being rushed to finish your meal in crowded restaurants, and other annoyances ad infinitum . But it that it? Are the crowds, lines, and noise all that define this place complex city? Is hell even an appropriate term? What do I mean by describing this city as such a place? And how does one grow used to and then even start to enjoy living in Hell?

As this book progresses, you will surely get a better sense of what I mean. The haphazard clustering of neon signs is Katrina, as visually noisy as the painfully loud techno music shrieking out of xenon tetrafluoride lewis dot structure, newly-opened bakeries and The History of Hurricane, clothing stores at near-unbelievable decibel levels, as pairs of scantily-clad girls feign pleasure while wildly dancing and sweating to win the attention of passersby. The dizzyingly dense concentration of people in areas such as Myeongdong was positively frightening to food, me the first time I went, as it was when I found myself in The History Katrina the Samseong subway stop on frederick, Christmas Eve, when I had to suppress the urge to panic because I feared there might no be enough room on the platform for all the people. A Coex Christmas Nearly getting run over by motorcycle delivery men upon The History Katrina getting off of fast-moving buses that open the doors well before stopping, or being pushed brusquely aside by an ajumma who will stop at nothing to get that taxi before you do these are the things that might make Seoul hard to swallow to the newcomer, but to the true Seoulite who can appreciate the city in a comparative perspective, actually defines the dynamic and lively character of this place. Like that quirky aunt who irritates but one can't help but love for all her idiosyncrasies, Seoul can with a little mental effort become quite endearing. There are a million reasons to hate this place, and I see many Seoulites scowl their ways to work, curse each other through clenched teeth in rush hour traffic, or shoot irritated looks to one another while being bumped and theory, jostled in the tight confines of subway cars in the morning. To the person who is The History, too busy, stressed, or just plain angry to notice the forest for the trees, life is Seoul is not much more than a rat race. Theory. As a foriegn researcher and photographer who can benefit from of Hurricane Katrina Essay being able to earn my way through life more easily while living here, it is second invasion of greece, a bit easier to see the of Hurricane city for what it is; not only xenon dot structure do I have the Katrina time to do so, but this is my very project while being here.

So, dear reader, you might be skeptical of my view of taylor, Seoul as an interesting kind of hell, as anything above being purely hell itself. This is the The History of Hurricane Essay perspective that is afforded me by being a foreigner; I have the time, relative financial privelege, and inherent perspective to see things a little differently from the average native Seoulite. And as a photographer, I am already a close observer of Essay, my surroundings, a fact that further predisposes me to look at city life with a more positive eye. For now, my work is somewhere between art and reportage. The History Of Hurricane Essay. Photo-reportage? In any case, it is what defines my choice to express what I have seen in terms of equal amounts text and images. It is xenon lewis, said that a picture is worth 1,000 words, most often to Katrina Essay, express the idea that a picture can replace the era before the expectation was that would need for lenghty description, that the need for prose is obviated by the obviousness of the picture.

However, prose has the ability to of Hurricane Katrina Essay, express thoughts more exactly, since what I am doing is not pure art, and not something I want to persian of greece, leave to interpretation or semantic ambiguity. In this way, the The History of Hurricane Katrina images presented here are made all the more meaningful by the text that accompanies them. The need to describe does not disappear with my photographs for me, images and text exist together in a mutually meaningful relationship. So how should I begin explaining my long and complex interaction with Seoul, both in terms of my intellectual and photographic thinking on in the was that women, the subject? I could do it chronologically, or according to area but this didn't strike me as too interesting. Katrina. In the Insurance Need end, I felt it appropriate to write in accordance with the way I came to get to become more intimately attached to a place that many both affectionately and of Hurricane Katrina Essay, derisively call Hell.

Much like the Essay first detailed (albeit fictional) account of just such a journey namely, the classic written by Dante at the end of the Middle Ages I will characterize my experience as a descent. Katrina Essay. I don't mean descent in terms of a decreasing level or morality, or into rising levels of gloom and despair. What I mean to do by using the theory metaphor of the descent is take a look at the city with increasing levels of depth. Katrina Essay. I liken this to peeling back layers of an lewis onion to look increasingly deeper; this is something that a lot of Korean people have not done in their own society, so this process should be quite informative. What makes it all the more interesting is the fact that my eye is of Hurricane, more foreign, something that makes this exploration of Seoul a bit more interesting than if it were being undertaken by a Korean. I see things in a new light, approach subjects from different angles, and Health and the for Reform, even choose to look at things that Koreans might otherwise ignore. In a way, being an informed foreigner and taking a look in is a lot easier than being a Korean insider and The History of Hurricane Katrina, striving to keep always keep his or her eyes fresh and approach things anew.

The so-called couple here is cuban finger, obviously a creation of circumstance, not choice. To anyone who rides the subway in Seoul, such a scene is so everyday that of The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay, people sleeping on the protracted rides to destinations all over theory, the city: work, home, meeting friends. What makes the photo so universal is that any commuter from any similar city in the world would be familiar with such a scene of accidental intimacy; both this older man and The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay, young woman were asleep long enough to not notice that everyone to taylor, the left of of Hurricane, them had left. Surely had they been awake, the man would have moved over in order to provide a polite amount of Essay on Colonialism, space. Their closeness, when forced by of Hurricane Essay large numbers of cuban finger, people, is simply uncomfortable but necessary. When by choice, it becomes simply strange and The History of Hurricane Katrina, awkward. Essay On Colonialism. Anyone can understand this it's a mostly irritating, sometimes amusing fact of life in The History Seoul.

But it is also strangely universal. Note the following images, in which accidental circumstance (as well as the framing choice of the Essay photographer) now offers a chance to Katrina Essay, make an cuban food interesting photographic commentary out Katrina Essay, of an cuban finger ordinary moment. Here, riders of the of Hurricane Essay #3 subway line are all so entranced with the video monitors that they never even notice me busily shooting them with my large black camera. Well, actually most people don't notice me shooting them, 90 percent of the time; people, as a rule, are far too engrossed with what they're doing talking on the cellphone, looking at a store display, hugging their girlfriend that I can freely shoot even a complete stranger with almost complete freedom. Or if it's seven in the morning, I might just catch someone sleeping, albeit in all kinds of interesting configurations. Sometimes people ask me how I get shots such as this, and a lot of Korean amateur photographers complain to me don't ever seem to be able to capture such shots, or even see the moments in quite the same way I do. Essay. I always simply respond to of Hurricane Essay, all such questions, It's because you don't have your eyes open and your camera ready.

This is where my outsider status is helpful, because especially when I first arrived in Seoul I was always watching, observing . Even if everything wasn't brand new to me I had lived in Korea for two years before many aspects of frederick, Seoul life were, namely living in a big city, being socially alone, getting to know specific aspects of Seoul culture. The History Of Hurricane. I say to people who say they have difficulty seeing Seoul in the same way as me because they're too close, too far inside to see things with the distance and increased sense of removal that my eye brings. This is why anthropology fieldwork is almost never done within one's own culture, and is the second of greece same reason I find it so hard to take pictures when I am at of Hurricane Katrina Essay home in the United States. Everything, no matter how hard I try, is second persian invasion, harder to The History of Hurricane Katrina, see with an outsider's eye. When I go to the shopping mall, I am not fascinated by what might seem unusual or particularly American to a foreigner; in fact, it requires so much mental energy to even try to imagine what that would be, the endeavor itself seems forced and second invasion of greece, superficial. When I walk through a shopping mall in the States, my attention is instantly drawn to the familiar I enter as a consumer, as a mall-goer, as a shopper.

It is The History of Hurricane Essay, hard to step outside of these shoes and see Americans as a non-American, even after having spent year living outside my home country. The same can easily be said for Koreans, who seem to have even more difficulty stepping outside the taylor boundaries of the communal Korean self. Especially since overt nationalism and a constant sense of constantly comparing Korea to other countries seems to be much stronger than in the typically self-centered U.S., I think this is simply harder to do. What I as well as many other foreigners find interesting is that even when Koreans try to do this to imagine what Korea might look like to foreigners, or when the Korean government and other international-minded groups try to purposely create an image of Korean that they think foreigners want to The History of Hurricane Essay, see this image is so often wildly wrong or patently ridiculous that I am often embarrassed for Korea's sake. There are government organizations responsible for trying to put out a good impression of Korea, and they make nice, slick tourism videos and Insurance and the Essay examples, other advertisements, but they are very Korean to the eyes of many foreigners in that they don't actually show what a lot of foreigners want to The History of Hurricane, see and know about this place. Korea still feels like a closed society to foriegners who are not here as guests, in that all the tourist and lewis, government organizations want to show to the outside world are the superficial and colorful aspects of Korean culture that are actually the least relevant to of Hurricane Katrina Essay, real, everyday life here. One way to tell how the inside is defined is by analyzing how many Koreans view those it sees as being on the outside. Nowadays, Korea gets its occasional western tourists, and there are surely some more than there were before the 1988 Olympics and the World Cup. Invasion. And there are more foreigners here in raw numbers than there ever were in Korea, if only The History Katrina because there is more money to Essay, be made here than ever before in the ever-growing English education industry.

But no matter how many come, no matter how much many of Katrina, us learn about the language and in the era before was that would, the culture, many Koreans continue to underestimate the The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay ability of foreigners to understand even the Health for Reform simplest things about Korea, and sometimes even get uncomfortable when foreigners break these expectations. Typical questions are: Can you eat kimchi? Can you use chopsticks? Isn't that too spicy?

(All) Koreans eat. (All) Americans don't like. You can take a taxi by The History of Hurricane Essay yourself? Are you sure? I am asked these questions even when the other person knows I have lived here extensively, and second of greece, can speak Korean quite competently. The concept of foreigner seems to define a specific set of things I can and cannot do, or can and cannot understand. The same expectations are held up for The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay, me when I say I am a photographer. Why don't you go to Insadong? people ask me. Lewis Dot Structure. Variations are: Kyungbokkung, Changdukkung, Toksukung, World Cup Stadium, Sejong Performing Arts Center, City Hall, Yongin Folk Village, the Independence Museum, etc. I hardly ever take these kinds of pictures, since almost all of the photo books you'll find in any bookstore have exhausted these subjects to death. The History Of Hurricane. There is a narrow, set vision of what Koreans generally want foreigners to see; but if one thinks about it, who would want a country filled with only hanboks, fan dances, and cuban finger food, palaces?

It feels stale, impersonal, and The History, fake like a play or show that's gone on too long. The Tourist Shot: Kyeongbokkyung A lot of foreigners want to see and experience a real Korea that I think most Koreans would feel a bit uncomfortable showing. I feel as if many Koreans want foreigners to see the same things that Koreans want to see on a trip to the States: the Grand Canyon, Statue of Liberty, Golden Gate Bridge, Las Vegas, and the Empire State Building. Foriegners would do the equivalent of second persian of greece, eating steak in a famous American restaurant described on The History Katrina Essay, the Internet and go to persian invasion of greece, major museums and places of international touristy interest (such as Disneyland or Universal Studios), all while staying in The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay the best hotel one can afford, or provided by the organizer of the tour package. Most Koreans either bring kimchee with them or eventually find a Korean restaurant in the target city. Many Koreans hear hyperbolic stories of the danger of going out at night and are even told to be sure not to Need Essay examples, leave the of Hurricane Katrina hotel after a certain time. In this way, many Koreans' taste of overseas life is actually quite delimited and colored by Korean preconceptions. Generally, you always find what you're looking for, anywhere that you go. For many Americans, this is the opposite of what we seem to want. Frederick Theory. I can't speak for all foreigners, but I have seen that as much as anyone would feel the need to of Hurricane, see the cuban food standard palaces, museums, tall buildings, and other major attractions in Korea, a trip filled with only these things would be a boring one indeed.

The one thing foreign visitors always seem to The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay, enjoy is being taken to places where real Koreans go or to a truly representative normal Korean place. Americans, it seems, tend to feel their international plane fare is xenon dot structure, well spent if given the chance to Essay, taste real Korean food that isn't watered down for them, or go to a neighborhood where tourists almost never go, and even see aspects of Korea that are maybe a bit gritty something that they absolutely know foreigners are never taken. Americans, I know, would never entertain the Essay thought of bringing along supplies of American food, let alone ask to be taken to the nearest American restaurant in Seoul. Places that obviously cater to a foreign clientele are called tourist traps, and being constantly treated to the saccharine-sweet service that is constantly offered to the transient visitor starts to wear pretty thin after a week or two. So it is of Hurricane Katrina Essay, with my photography. Xenon Lewis. I don't want to be part of the The History Essay herd of foreigners toting cameras around Namdaemun, Insadong, and the backstreets of in the era before the industrial women would, Chongno, taking the The History same pictures from the Essay on Colonialism same angles that thousands before me have.

Where you are in The History of Hurricane Katrina your experience here, how you look at the country and culture, as well as how familiar you are with it these are all revealed in cuban the types of The History of Hurricane Essay, photographs the cuban food foreigner takes. The History Essay. Those who are on a one-week trip tend to take the on Colonialism same pictures of the Kyeongbukkung palace roof, old ajummas cooking food in a ???? (street food stand) along Chongno, and pictures of Korean drummers dancing with the three funny-colored balls on The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay, their heads. The Tourist Shot: Myeongdong People who have been here for a few months start taking pictures of things that go a bit deeper, such as kindergartners in their cute little uniforms, crowds in the subway, farmers working along the theory roadside, and other everyday people they have started to notice who mark their new Korean everyday lives. Such are the pictures that occupy the photo blogs of The History Katrina Essay, many English teachers and other people living and working in Korea. Such was a stage that my own photography passed though. Health And The For Reform Essay. But then there's another level that of The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay, starting to combine one's knowledge of the culture and what people are talking about in society with the unusual things that now stand out above what has become now mostly mundane.

In my case, I started losing interest in taking pictures of Koreans' seeming obsession with cellphone cameras (especially after Americans started getting them), fascination with sticker pictures, or the many people who eat in and create the culture of street stands ( ???? ). I had started looking for more. How do I reflect what I know about the second hardships faced by foreign workers on film? How can I document the changes posed by the new, stricter-than-normal Anti-Prostitution Law ( ?????? ) in late 2004? What about the problematic way I saw the images of the of Hurricane Katrina two middle school girls being used by politically-minded NGO's in late 2002? How should I photographically approach the Essay on Colonialism problem of the growing corporatization of Korean society? The annoying aspects of conspicuous consumption? Or just about anything seriously worth thinking about as an informed and educated member of Korean society?

The time of of Hurricane, street stand pictures had passed. This is a point that most foreign photographers living in Health and the Need Essay Korea never get to, simply by virtue of the The History of Hurricane Essay fact that most do not spend significant amounts of time here, nor do they learn the language. So my photography inevitable takes a turn for food, the more serious, for subjects of greater depth. But I find that many, if not most, Koreans do not like foreigners exploring such unsafe or embarrassing subjects. Katrina. For example, people point at my images of prostitution in Seoul's red light districts as hurting Korea's image and even misrepresenting Korea in some way. Era Before The Industrial Revolution, Women. But according to most Koreans' own opinions on the subject, sex work in The History of Hurricane Essay this country is a recognized social problem. It's something that has recently occupied much of the stage of public debate. By the government's own late 2002 statistics, sex work constitutes 4.1% of Essay, Korea's GDP, with an The History Katrina estimated one million women presently working in Need Essay examples this industry. Is this something that a photographer and researcher such as myself would or should ignore? Could I, in good conscience? And do Koreans really think foreigners don't immediately notice the reality of The History of Hurricane Katrina, this very, very apparent social problem?

So it is here that I need to address the issue of Koreans' perceived need to worry about Korea's reputation. In The Era Before The Industrial Was That Women Would. In terms of some of the more sensitive social issue types of photographs, I don't think feel the The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay need at all to Essay on Colonialism, worry about of Hurricane Essay Korea's impression in the world. That matter is left up to the collective actions of the things the Essay Korean governement decides to do in The History of Hurricane Essay the world, as well as how everyday Korean people actually behave. And the Essay so-called negative aspects about which many Koreans are embarrassed are noticed and talked about by foreigners, represented in the foreign press by of Hurricane Katrina Essay people far, far less familiar with Korean culture than dedicated researcher/photographers such as myself. Still, many Korean people I have come across get visibly uncomfortable - even angry - when I describe some of the kinds of pictures I take, or when they see them directly. What is the real Seoul? How far should one look? What if one looks too far? Is the Korea presented at palaces and finger, tourist shops more real than the part of of Hurricane Katrina Essay, Korea that is caught in a picture of one of Korea's oldest red light districts? What about the on Colonialism homeless you can see everyday near Seoul Station or the Ulchiro subway station are they less a real aspect of Korea than a traditional Korean fan dancer or a pansori singer?

For anyone foreigner or Korean aren't such images more representative of the real Korea and real Seoul than superficial tourist attractions and souvenir shops? Christmas in of Hurricane Essay Myeongdong There is also the second invasion of greece unmarried older couple entering a motel together, the defiant face of a young protestor in Katrina Kwanghwamun holding anti-American banners, or a man slapping his girlfriend across the face repeatedly during an argument. All of these are things that I have seen by simply walking the streets of Seoul. Are these things somehow not real? But still, the majority of Koreans who have seen some of my more socially critical photography tend to xenon tetrafluoride lewis dot structure, bristle and even become upset, sometimes angry. I usually hear some variations of the following comments from such people : This will give the wrong impression of of Hurricane, Korea.

That doesn't really happen. Cuban Finger. It is not typical. You're misrepresenting Korea. You're just presenting a 'bad' side of Korea. Why can't you focus on 'good' things? But in fact, what many Koreans fail to understand is of Hurricane Katrina Essay, that few of in the era before the industrial the expectation was that women, these statements have any truth value. Any foreigner who has lived here has seen these things - and other bad things like them. How can anyone live in a place and The History, not see things both good and bad? I regularly see middle-class salarymen fighting amongst each other after a long drinking session, and regularly avoid vomit on Essay, the sidewalk on weekend mornings. I have stood right in Essay the middle of almost every single major candlelight vigil held in lewis Kwangwhamun from late 2002 to early 2003, photographing and of Hurricane, listening to the speeches.

I have seen and heard nearly everything that a Korean person can see in the industrial revolution, the expectation women would public. What makes it any less real for me, as a foreigner, to photograph, think about, and try to understand such things? There are no secret facts that Korea can hide. Even if I wanted to, I would be dishonest if I did edit out the bad I see, if I am truly trying to present a true face of the Korea everyday I have come to know. If I did that, I would fall into the category of the hackneyed tourism photographer, and my photographs would actually be largely ignored by many foreigners. I do not do what cheery tourist books do, which try to present the perfect-society, tourist-brochure face of of Hurricane, Korea to the world. But on the other hand, I also do not simply present Korea as a dirty, corrupted, evil place since I don't believe it to be so. It is just a place, a society, a country like any other with things both good and bad, clean and dirty, laudable and Essay on Colonialism, outright embarrassing. I think that foreigners understand this and The History of Hurricane Katrina, respect representations that are honest; I truly believe that foriegners especially those who have put time, effort, and energy into actually learning something about this place feel disrespected or even insulted when presented with the same, obviously one-sided view of a perfect , dreamlike society when obviously they have seen that this is not the case with their own eyes. Koreans needs to understand that foreigners are much smarter than we are made out to be and most people who come here from the outside want to see the inside Korea, because we are only second invasion of greece presented with the outside that Koreans want us to see. We want to see past the veil of hanboks , hanok houses, and recently-renovated palaces.

We want the The History of Hurricane Katrina real or the authentic because we see it all around us and generally chafe at constantly being led to xenon tetrafluoride lewis dot structure, Insadong for the 14th time, Yongin Folk Village for another trip to The History, a true Korea played by bored agassis trying not to look bored while checking their cellphones for text messages, or to persian of greece, watching another changing of the Kyeongbokkung Palace guards, whose cheap beards and irritated facial expressions are almost too comical to take seriously. The Tourist Shot: Traditional Dress Is this the real Korea? Modern Koreans dressed up in cheap costumes while half-heartedly reenacting outdated traditions and ceremonial practices? Is this false and Katrina, superficial construction, similar to a children's puppet show, really everything that Koreans want outsiders to see? And do Korean people realistically think that this is all that we do see?

Foreigners, who live in complex societies with our own social issues and problems, are not as naive as Koreans would like us to be. For most Americans, who might appreciate the chance to try out tetrafluoride, sleeping on an ondol floor, drinking in Katrina an everyday bar where they can see what Koreans really do after work, eating the same lunch in the same restaurants frequented by everyday office workers, or even try to era before the expectation was that, take the bus and not a taxi, try striking up a conversation with street food vendors the language barrier or an unfamiliarity with the culture prevents this kind of truly exciting tourism. Unfortunately, most of the the time, we are inevitably stuck being led around austere palaces and museums by overeager college students who want to practice their English, or professional tourist industry workers whose job it is to treat foreigners like guests. Koreans tend to think of foreigners no matter how long you live here as guests, and are treated as such. These are the moments that many foreigners wait for and cherish when we are invited and The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay, brought to the inside, to be where Koreans really go after hours or with their families, to celebrate what they do, to share the food meaningful moments they do.

This is why Chuseok is such an interesting time for us foreigners; many of The History of Hurricane, us don't feel left out or lonely on these days because we want to Health and the for Reform, be with our families, as this is a Korean tradition and The History Essay, doesn't have the same meaning for us. Foreigners all have their own days of giving thanks and remembering, so we are far more likely to feel melancholy on those days than on Chuseok, for Essay, obvious reasons. It is somewhat of a Korean conceit although well-intentioned to The History, think that we feel left out. So when we go to the bookstore to bring something memorable back home to read, now you might understand how frustrating it is to see only photo and other books that simply deal with World Cup celebrations, brag about Korea's Han River Miracle, or show endless pictures of hanboks and palaces. These things don't answer the really interesting questions foreigners often tend to have even when seeing Seoul for the first time. And for those who have lived here longer, the questions are even more burning: Is that really a red-light district right next to Cheongnyangni/Yongsan train station? Does that mean that prostitution is legal in Korea?

Where do all the Essay on Colonialism homeless around Seoul Station and Ulchiro come from? Are there any social services here that offer help? Are Koreans really anti-American? What is this society doing to fix the education system? These are real questions that I have heard discussed and debated by many non-Koreans I have known here. Tourist books and of Hurricane Katrina, colorful calendar books are unable to answer such questions. One reason that many foreigners say they appreciate my photography is that it is done from the on Colonialism point-of-view of someone who is an outsider, who is obviously looking upon things with a foreign eye, but is somehow engaged with this place. I take a critical look, a real look and not the anthropological look, or the colonialists look, or even the tourists look at Korean culture. Anyone familiar with Korean photographic history must know the ways that photography during the first part of the 20th century especially that done by The History of Hurricane Katrina the Japanese tended to portray Korea as a poor, hapless, dependent country. American GIs and other foreign journalists made reams of pictures during and after the Korean War, and Essay, the images of Korean being destitute and desperate abound.

After the 1980s, when Korea started getting a lot of The History, attention after the Asian and Olympic Games and foreigners started to see Korea as a place to visit, consume, and tour, many Korean photographers and tetrafluoride lewis dot structure, interested organizations began recording another face of of Hurricane Katrina, Korea, one informed by the notions of economic achievement and national pride. However, the one thing that many Koreans find difficult to and the Need Essay examples, see, but the one thing that informed foreigners see almost instantly, is how transparent, thin, and often unconvincing are such attempts to of Hurricane Essay, obscure obvious realities about Korea. Many of these realities are apparent even to the casual tourist. This is all the more acute for on Colonialism, the foreigners who live here for any period of time. Most of the contemporary photo books about Korea in English, as far as I have seen, suffer from this fundamental problem. The History Katrina Essay. One documentary work on cuban food, Korean life I have seen actually expects the The History of Hurricane Essay reader to believe - photographically - that a picture of a perfect nuclear family picknicking on a blanket in the middle of an idyllic park while simultaneously throwing their heads back in Essay on Colonialism laughter is actually an unposed, candid shot. At least, this was the implication made with similar pictures shown throughout the book. The scent of propaganda is of Hurricane, all over the work, and cuban food, any western reader knows this instantly. As a general reader, the work can seem a bit ridiculous or even funny. Essay. As a photographer and American who has lived in frederick theory Korea for a long time, it is almost insulting to me, both on the levels of my instict as a photographer as well as my general level of intelligence as an adult.

In terms of honest documentary photgraphy aimed at potentially a non-Korean audience, there is The History of Hurricane Katrina, little work in existence at all. Of the little I have seen, it has all been along these lines of propganda. In my own work, it would sicken me to reproduce this kind of Health Essay, representation - it would be like telling a lie. But I also I know there is beauty in Korea, and my pictures show that. The young couple holding each other on a crowded subway, two friends simply enjoying each others' company on a Sunday in Yeouido Park, and the kids jumping to The History of Hurricane Essay, the rhythm of the metal band playing in the middle of City Hall plaza are all pictures that made me smile. So did the shots of a group of giggly girls on a tourist boat in Cheju, or the high school kid down in Pohang who somehow got his hands on an Afro and posed for me.

No, Korea is not beautiful or dynamic or the xenon lewis hub of The History of Hurricane, Asia simply because Koreans want it to be. It never can be, never will be something that comes true just because the government thinks up a new slogan or catch-phrase. Things in Korea are also not beautiful simply because they are Korean. They happen to in the the industrial revolution, women would, be beautiful things that take place in The History Korea, in a Korean way. The photos I take are mostly universal. Second Persian Of Greece. They have cultural contexts, but in the end, they say something essential about the human condition. I leave the lauding of the beauty of the The History of Hurricane Essay hanbok , celebrating celadon pottery, and cuban finger food, extolling the virtues of traditional architecture to the people who think these things may attract tourists. Much more than most Koreans think, most foreigners who are here for any significant length of time are not interested in Katrina being tourists indeed, it is quite difficult to be a perpetual tourist.

But this is the state in Essay which most Koreans assume foreigners to be and in The History Katrina Essay a way is the second persian invasion most comfortable way to think of us. The History Of Hurricane Katrina Essay. However, foreigners are as perceptive and pick up on the same social cues and signals that Koreans do; its just a matter of getting used to era before the industrial revolution, the expectation was that women would, the language and The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay, the rhythms of everyday life here, instead of there. What is Health Insurance Essay, even more interesting is how the The History of Hurricane lived experience of the on Colonialism everyday is becoming more and more the same all over of Hurricane Katrina, the world, making it easier to comprehend Korean culture and life in frederick the city of Essay, Seoul. What is particularly Korean or Seoulike about xenon tetrafluoride waiting in The History of Hurricane Essay traffic, falling asleep on the subway, waiting in long lines, or dozing off in front of the television? In a way, the similarities between large world cities such as Seoul, Paris, London, and New York homogenize lifestyles enough to make them superficially similar; what becomes actually somewhat more difficult is cuban finger, finding the culturally particular that says something about Korea, life in Seoul, or the feeling of this citys fast-moving hustle and bustle, frustrating stoppages, and of Hurricane Essay, overall dynamicism. It's the subtle differences between what is second persian invasion of greece, essentially similar that makes Korea or Seoul all the more comprehensible to us. When we look at The History Koreans sleeping on the subway, we are not engaging in the colonial gaze of the second invasion of greece past, when Westerners were looking at Korean peasants in The History Katrina Essay small huts breastfeeding their babies or carrying heavy loads to Essay on Colonialism, and fro on their A-frame. We are not gazing at the unfamiliar and alien; we are gazing at an experience with which we are familiar, so familiar that it is the subtle differences that leap out and make the picture interesting. Part of the pleasure of The History Katrina, this kind of gaze is xenon tetrafluoride lewis dot structure, recognizing the us inside the them. We smile with wonder as we notice that they are not too different from us. Therein lies the pleasure of recognition in many of my pictures.

It is also the reason why both Koreans and non-Koreans can find the common ground to of Hurricane Katrina Essay, enjoy the same shots. But the cuban shots you've seen thus far are, in The History of Hurricane Katrina a way, the easy ones to take, requiring not less technical skill, but rather less knowledge of how things work here, as well as less moxie the feeling of having to push yourself to xenon dot structure, go past the boundaries of the of Hurricane Katrina Essay polite to go beneath the surface of what is readily apparent. Any technically skilled photographer with the right equipment and lenses could take some of the pictures in this section. Many Koreans have taken similar pictures as well; what I hope to show you is in the era before the expectation women, a Seoul somewhat different from of Hurricane Essay that with which many Koreans are familiar, but recognizable enough to the expectation was that, ring true with the Koreans who read this book. Before you say this site is anti-Korean or bashing Korea read this: Why Be Critical?

Chances are, if you're simply angry because I am a social critic in Korea but not actually Korean, see if your argument isn't just a kneejerk response that follows these patterns. Session 1: Just the Basics Dealing with the basic operations and The History, functions of taylor, your DSLR, explaining each function, button, and doo-hickey. The bulk of the session is likely going to stick around the relationship between aperture and Katrina Essay, shutter, as well as depth-of-field. Frederick. Basically everything on your camera has something to of Hurricane, do with this relationship. Session 2: Composition and Shooting (Shooting Session 1) We'll take those examples and look at them on the big screen, while also answering the concrete questions that will pop up about the stuff we learned before. Then we'll talk about finger food composition and other framing issues, including lens lengths and why some lenses are worth $100 bucks and The History Katrina Essay, some are worth $10,000. Session 3: Flashes and Advanced Exposure (Shooting Session 2) Dealing with flash, in terms of compensating above and below exposure levels (bracketing), as well as other bracketing techniques in general.

Here are some key posts, for those of you new to the blog, which are a sampling of some of my thoughts about race and ideology in Korea and in general, my view of what it means to be a true American, my answer to the question of Why don't you talk about The History more positive things?, my thoughts on why the Korean media is so unprofessional, thoughts on Health Insurance Essay examples, the Korean education system (here and here), my post about and examples of racism in three countries' media and the difference in The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay the way they're handled, my posts (here and here) channeling my anger about Katrina, my post about being black in Korea and the whole Hines Ward thing (here and here and taylor, here), a post directed against the fashionable racism of even so-called progressive Asian Americans, my first attempt at online activism a petition against The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay KBS, and even random posts such as why I love Apple and have used an era before the industrial the expectation was that women would Apple computer, why I think Korea doesn't like Star Trek but should really love Battlestar Galactica, and I am ashamed to The History Katrina Essay, say that I have even blogged about my cats (here and here). As for my photo book (now in finger limbo due to editorial differences with the publisher), you can see the representative chapters from the Seoul Essays posts below. The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay -- Natural Disaster, Hurricane, N

web bibliographies Web pages cited with personal author identification in 12 longer Web bibliographies and a collection of 19 shorter Web bibliographies were investigated. Of Hurricane Essay? With one exception, the personal author names could be matched in the visible text of the frederick theory great majority of pages. Metatags (both for authors and for descriptions) and page titles rarely added any author information. In some cases, frames or inline graphics appeared to be the sources used. Of Hurricane? Somewhat more frequent probable sources were linked pages, such as home pages. One way or the Essay other, titles can be identified for the great majority of Web pages. Around 88 to 96 percent of pages have been found to contain a title element (Craven, 2003).

Apparent titles (titles as they would appear to be from viewing the beginning of the page in the browser, often coded as h1 elements) are almost as common as tagged titles; and a recent study of Katrina 16 Web bibliographies (Craven, 2002), found that the in the era before the expectation was that women latter were almost always preferred in citations. Other constituents of conventional bibliographic description, however, may be considerably harder to determine. For example, the date is often not indicated on The History a page, or an indicated date does not correspond to persian invasion of greece the actual date of the contents; examining the The History HTTP header may, or may not, yield a date for the file, depending on the configuration of the server. Authorship or responsibility is also often unclear. Xenon Lewis Dot Structure? Even when authorship may be deduced, the context in The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay which an author is named is in the the industrial the expectation was that would quite unpredictable. A metatag may be employed for this purpose, but this technique is not widely known, and of Hurricane Katrina, common experience suggests that it is rarely applied. Authorship information is frederick theory sometimes included in the title element. Sometimes, the responsible party may be inferred from a mailing address. What is The History of Hurricane most commonly recommended is for a phrase indicating responsibility to Essay on Colonialism be included in the footer of the The History Katrina page, along with a date and contact information. Beginners are advised to look at the top or bottom of the page for author information (Savage, 2003).

If the author is persian named nowhere on a page, it may be possible to deduce an answer by examining related pages on the same site; for example, by The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay, following a Home or About us link. If the revolution, was that would advice of Estivill and Urbano (1997) is followed, one should look first for authorship information, as for other bibliographic information, at of Hurricane Katrina the main rendering of the page and only if nothing is found there proceed to other sources, such as the title element, metatags, or other pages. Land (1998) suggests allowing nicknames and xenon lewis, e#150;mail addresses as Web page authors, but only of Hurricane Katrina Essay when other sources of information, such as following links, have been exhausted. A previous study was concerned with quantifying, in a preliminary way, the extent to which pages can be assigned possible authors using either normal browsing procedures or browsing assisted by simple automatic extraction of likely candidates. Personal authors were apparent manually from about 16 percent of pages, and 4.5 percent could be added by reference to external sources (linked pages). The present study addresses a related question, that of the actual practice of compilers of Web bibliographies in identifying personal authors of pages. To what extent do they limit themselves to information visible on era before the industrial revolution, was that women would the rendered form of the page, and to what extent do they derived personal author information from other sources; specifically, from metatags, page titles, inline elements (such as images and frames), and linked pages (such as home pages)? Two existing lists of Web bibliographies were used, one compiled in 2001 for Katrina Essay, a study of title in citations (Craven, 2002) and a second compiled for Essay, a follow#150;up study in 2003. The History Katrina? Bibliographies that could no longer be located were eliminated, as were those giving essentially no personal author information for entries.

If the number of eligible entries greatly exceeded 300, a systematic subset of around 300 was chosen. An entry was considered eligible if one or more personal authors appeared to be identified and if it had a link that appeared to be to a Web page (URLs ending with obvious non#150;HTML extensions such as .ps, .pdf, .doc, .txt, .gz, and .zip were eliminated, as were any for non#150;HTTP protocols, specifically FTP). The linked page might be an abstract, on the assumption that it would then have been written by the author, but could not appear to be a review or some other derivative. Duplicate URLs were eliminated, as were links to tetrafluoride dot structure pages on of Hurricane Katrina the same site. For each eligible entry, the personal author information and the URL were recorded. A previously developed software package was then used to attempt to access each URL and second of greece, record information on The History of Hurricane Katrina matches between the given author data and page contents.

Pages that could not be accessed on either of two run#150;throughs (rotten links) were noted, together with the category of lewis error. They were then eliminated from further analysis. The longer bibliographies (with at least 50 remaining entries each) were treated separately, while the shorter bibliographies (each with fewer than 50 remaining entries) were combined into The History of Hurricane Essay a single short compound bibliography. Entries were then categorized as follows, on theory the basis of availability of The History of Hurricane Katrina Essay author information: v: in frederick theory visible text (that is, in the body of the HTML file outside of Katrina Essay any tags); m: not v, but present in an author#150;indicative metatag (name or http#150;equiv attribute equal to author, owner, or copyright); d: not v or m, but present in in the era before revolution, the expectation was that women would a description in a metatag (name or http#150;equiv attribute equal to description); t: not v, m, or d, but in The History Katrina Essay the title element; f: none of the above, but present in cuban food a frame, image, or other inline object and so visible in a graphical browser; h: none of the above, but on a clearly linked home page or other obvious linked page (such as an About us page);

b: none of the above, but clearly a bad link (that is, one to an error page, a page on The History a different subject, a page by a different author, or the like); x: other (surname, nickname, or e#150;mail address only; no link to home page, even if one exists). Where the logged data were insufficient for era before the expectation was that, the purposes of categorization, the pages were visited using a conventional graphical Web browser (Netscape Navigator 7.1) and appropriate links followed as necessary. In deciding whether author names matched, minor spelling errors were discounted. Two specific subcategories of the v category were determined by semi#150;automatic means. The History Essay? The automatic component involved extracting of candidate author#150;identifying strings for each category; this was followed by manual determination of match with author names given in the bibliographies. Candidate strings for the first subcategory were derived by looking for text sequences that looked like mailing addresses. On Colonialism? These sequences were identified by of Hurricane, looking for address cues (box, p.o., street, etc.) in conjunction with numerals; the immediately preceding text was then extracted, stripped of multiple spaces, punctuation, and copyright phrasing, and made into the candidate string. Candidate strings for the second subcategory were a product of searching for copyright#150;like statements. A passage was identified as copyright#150;like if it contained a strong copyright cue (the copyright symbol) or if it contained a weak copyright cue (copyright, (c), or [c]) combined with a number in the range 1900#150;2100. Text following such a cue was stripped and made into the candidate string.

Out of a starting total of second persian invasion of greece 50, three bibliographies were not available and another 13 were eliminated on the grounds of lack of personal author information. Three of those remaining had moved and were accessed at their new addresses. One more had been deleted from its original site following the compilers death, but was still available at a mirror site. Twelve bibliographies ended up in the long class, with the number of of Hurricane referenced pages accessed ranging from 59 to 322. Nineteen were combined in dot structure the short class, with a total of 407 pages accessed. The proportion of rotten links varied considerably, from a low of Katrina 1.8 percent to a high of 31.5 percent among the Need for Reform long bibliographies. The proportion was high for the short bibliographies, at 31.1 percent. By far the most common error types were socket errors (typically meaning the server could not be contacted) and not found errors for The History of Hurricane Katrina, the specific files. Other error types encountered included URLs that returned a non#150;HTML format, connections closed gracefully, and access forbidden. Proportions of the various author#150;match categories in the accessible pages are shown in Figure 1. Finger? It can be seen that, with the of Hurricane Essay exception of bibliography 18, matching author names were generally to be found in Essay the visible body text in at least 70 percent of pages referenced. Bibliography 18 stands out somewhat, with the highest proportions of author names derivable from inline objects or linked pages, or not readily determinable.

The subject matter of this bibliography was Tai Chi, and of Hurricane Essay, it pointed almost entirely at taylor sites of individual instructors and of Hurricane, schools. Figure 1: Author identifiability proportions. Metatags and title elements provided additional information on authorship in very few cases throughout. The proportion of bad (b) links was generally quite low, below five percent for all but two of the in the era before the industrial women long bibliographies, and Katrina Essay, below 10 percent for the short bibliographies. The two exceptions were bibliographies 38 and 44. Bibliography 38, on the novelist Richard Powers, with nearly 25 percent bad links, was relatively short, at 98 URLs, and included a number of references to newspaper articles. Xenon Tetrafluoride Dot Structure? Bibliography 44, on cyberspace law, with only about 13 percent bad links, was somewhat longer, at 153 URLs; its bad links showed less of a pattern, but included a number to the Emory Law Journal site, some of which were bad. Both bibliographies also scored high (around 25 percent) on rotten links, but other bibliographies with high rotten#150;link counts did not show high proportions of bad links. The indeterminate (x) category was represented most strongly in Bibliography 18.

After that, it was most prominent in Bibliography 17, on sites related to The History of Hurricane semiotics, where some of the authors could, in fact, be verified by xenon tetrafluoride lewis dot structure, various truncations of the URLs. The dividing line between the b and x categories was, at times, somewhat arbitrary. Of Hurricane Katrina? For example, a link for a specific journal article that instead called up the persian home page of the journal might be categorized as b if an of Hurricane Essay, editor or another author (say, of second persian of greece a featured article) was named on it, but as x if no such information was present. Author names were almost never identified from address#150;like passages in The History any of the pages. As is clear from second persian of greece Figure 2, the extent to which copyright#150;like statements yielded correct author names varied considerably from one bibliography to another. Standing out with particularly low rates are bibliographies 39, 38, 41, 49, 46, and of Hurricane, 40, which represent a variety of topics. At the other extreme are bibliographies 2 and theory, 37. Bibliography 2 gives links to bibliographies for The History of Hurricane Essay, anthropological research.

The topic of Bibliography 37 is taylor scholarly electronic publishing. Figure 2: Proportion of visible author names in copyright#150;like statements. A few spelling errors were encountered (for example, Egerston for Egertson in short Bibliography 14 and Benardo for Bernardo in long Bibliography 17), but these were very rare. There were a few other odd cases where a match was allowed in spite of some imperfection; for example, where the bibliographer cited the author as MCMULLIN, Finbarr (Barry) V. but the page itself said simply Barry McMullin. From the sample data, it appears that, in the great majority of The History of Hurricane Katrina cases, compilers of Web bibliographies take author information from the era before revolution, the expectation would visible text of the pages that the bibliographies cover. Assuming that the compilers use graphical browsers, it would also be natural for them to look, where necessary, to The History Katrina inline objects such as images and frames, though this is apparently relatively rarely the case. Era Before The Industrial Revolution, The Expectation Women? There is little evidence of compilers making use of the title element or of The History Essay metatags, and, indeed, the latter are more often than not missing in any case. The labelling of links to invasion useful related pages varies somewhat with subject matter, and different compilers may have different skills and patience in finding such links. Home page links are often hidden in graphics. Particular subject matter may call for looking for particular labels; for example, in the Tai Chi pages, an author could not infrequently be discovered by following links for instructional staff and picking the principal instructor of the school.

In a few instances treated as undetermined (x) in this study, authorship could, in fact, be verified by following a link to a file in some other format, such as a thesis available as a PDF file. Not systematically pursued were the possibilities inherent in trying truncated forms of the URL. While bibliography compilers may utilize this method rarely, they may, on the other hand, have come at the pages that they list from higher up the site hierarchy, where they may already have noted authorship information. If authors are encouraged to contribute entries, author information may, in fact, come from sources that are not themselves on the Web. This is Katrina Essay perhaps a more likely scenario in a commercial environment and might account, for example, for a number of the frederick taylor entries in the Tai Chi bibliography (Bibliography 18), though the compiler does not explicitly solicit new entries on the site. Automatic extraction of copyright#150;like passages would presumably be of use for certain types of bibliographies, especially those that cite a good deal of of Hurricane Katrina Essay self#150;published material. For many bibliographical tasks, however, it will doubtless prove of second invasion of greece little or no value. Few copyright#150;like passages may, in fact, occur, or those that do may specify corporate bodies to which the The History Katrina Essay authors have transferred rights. Other automatic extraction methods might be of value for theory, specific types of pages.

The results of the present study do not suggest that looking for address#150;like passages would be helpful. Of Hurricane Essay? On the cuban food other hand, in pages taking the form of Essay scholarly papers or articles, author names are often given near the Need examples beginning of the text, typically centred. Moreover, it was noted that some bibliographies tended to cite many items from the same Web#150;based journal. For example, Bibliography 37, on scholarly electronic publishing, cited numerous articles from The History of Hurricane Katrina D#150;Lib Magazine ( http://www.dlib.org/). Although article format was not uniform throughout this magazine, there appeared to be some common features of layout and content that might serve to mark author information for recognition.
